What Australian homes look like today?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently released its statistics on the way we live.

There were nearly 11 million (10,852,208) private dwellings counted in the 2021 Census. These dwellings consisted of separate houses (70 per cent), apartments (16 per cent) and townhouses (13 per cent).

More than 2.5 million people or 10.3 per cent of us now live in apartments with more than half a million people (550,592) living in Australia’s 370,000 high-rise apartments (nine or more storeys).

The apartment trend continues to rise. Apartments account for nearly one-third (30.9 per cent) of the increase in private dwellings since the last Census in 2016.

Sydney leads the nation in high-density apartment living, housing nearly half of Australia’s high-rise population. About 45 per cent (247,506) of the people who live in high-rise apartments reside in Greater Sydney, where there are nearly 120,000 apartments or 32 per cent of the national total.

31 per cent of households own outright, 35 per cent own with a mortgage and 30 per cent rent.
